Here are a few pictures from Vatnajokull, photographer is Thordis Hognadottir
Vatnajokull is the biggest glacier in Europe, around 8000 square kilometers. There are a lot of active volcanoes under the icesheet and the most recent eruptions occured in 1996 and 1998. As eruptions cause a lot of ice to melt and thus flooding in places around the glacier scientists need to keep a close eye on the glacier. But the usual meltwater from the glacier also feeds a lot of Icelands hydroplants so the annual melting and precipitation is also of interest to the powercompanies.
Grimsfjall is the south and highest part of the calderarim, surrounding the Grimsvotn Caldera. The caldera is usually full of water overlain by a lid of ice around 200 m thick. The caldera is dammed by the surrounding icesheet so water collects there over time. As water collects the icesheet will start lifting up as icecubes in a glass as water is poured in. When the lake has reached its critical height, the weight of the water will brake the dam and the water starts its journey towards the see. In normal contitions this happens every 5 years or so, but with added meltwater from volcanic activity it can happen much more often, depending on how much ice the volcanoes are melting.
Every year the Icelandic Glaciological society arranges measuring trips up to the glacier where a lot of people from various parts of the society combine their efforts to do research on the glacier. I was lucky to be able to go on one of those trips and travelling with some of Icelands legends in glaciertravelling and to experience this extraordinary place in the world. I can't really describe what it feels like, after long hours travelling over the vast mass of ice on snowscooters, coming in to the great hut the Glaciological society has built on the highest top of the caldera rim (around 1800 m above see level), which is heated by geothermal water, We will cook, in great company reflecting on each others silly comments and doings over the day, someone telling stories from how it was travelling on the glacier in the old days, before jeeps and snowscooters, and getting ready to go to the sauna which is heated by natural steam from a borehole on the top of the mountain. From Grimsfjall you can see over to Oraefajokull, Icelands highest mountain and down to the alluvial plain south of the glacier where meltwater from the caldera bursts out in the big jokulhlaups. I can't imagine a better place to be at watching the sun go just below the horizone before it starts to rise again, on Icelands bright summer nights.
These pictures are from the autumntrip, 14.-17. September 2000. I was not on this trip, but my boyfriend Oliver went. Hopefully some of our own pictures will be here soon.
This is a picture taken from Vestari Sviahnjukur. The site of eruption in dec 1998 is below the cliff to the left of the picture (can't be seen). The huts on the mountain are located on the little hills on top of the mountain to the right on the picture.
This picture is taken from the west of the Caldera, the highest point is Vestari Sviahnjukur and the eruptionsite is a little to the left of the peak below the cliff.
This picture is taken below Vestari Sviahnjukur very close to the eruption site.
This picture is also taken from around the eruptionsite, but seen to the east. Just below the edge of the cliff on the left there is a little low in the glacier where meltwater from the caldera washes out in huge floods, called jokulhlaups.
This is the lake inside the caldera, a wound in the icesheet where the eruption in 1998 broke through.
How we can travel around on the glaciers? Well, Icelanders often spend almost as much money on the changes to the jeeps they buy as on the jeep it self... The biggest trick is to put huge tires under the cars (the ones on the front car are 44 inches in diameter) and deflate them so they will flatten and thus have a bigger surface touching the snow and they do get a better grip that way. But bigger tires meen you have to lift up the body of the car and in order to have some power people put in extra gearboxes to get extremely low gears (like you want to have on your mountainbikes for the steepest hills). In background you can see Hvannadalshnjukur, the highest point of Iceland, 2119 m. Hvannadalshnjukur is the highest point of Oraefajokull, an active volcano which had its last eruption in 17th century.
hi ma'am I already emailed to you my answer for our first online project.I hope its alright and you won't disagree with it.
hi mam this is my answer in number.3)
Warming in the arctic should be expected to take place with increasing speed once a certain threshold has been crossed (one can imagine rather than a smooth continuous graph, there would be a graph which for some time follows almost a straight line moving upward slowly and then once the threshold has been crossed, begins to curve upward dramatically - in short, if warming of the arctic is thought of as a curve on a graph, it should be expected to resemble the curve of a function that increases exponentially...the reason why this would be the case is that ice reflects almost all the energy it receives back into space, while water absorbs energy, and thus warms...as the ice decreases, the surface area of water increases, and thus the amount of warming increases due to this increased absorption...therefore the rate of warming begins to increase dramatically and the melting of the ice cap occurs at ever increasing speeds...given that the rate of warming has increased to 20 times the rate of the previous century, you can well imagine the exponential increase of the curve if the rate of increase was plotted on a graph, and as the ice sheet continues to retreat, this rate of warming can be expected to continue to increase - the curve would climb upward - and the real world analogue would be ever more rapid retreat of the ice cap). One of the criticism leveled at current climate change computer software is that it models climate change as taking place gradually, when the historical record indicates that climate changes suddenly.
3)in sea level
Sea-level rise is an increase in sea level. Multiple complex factors may influence this change.
Sea-level has risen about 130 meters (400 ft) since the peak of the last ice age about 18,000 years ago. Most of the rise occurred before 6,000 years ago. From 3,000 years ago to the start of the 19th century sea level was almost constant, rising at 0.1 to 0.2 mm/yr.[1] Since 1900 the level has risen at 1 to 2 mm/yr; since 1993 satellite altimetry from TOPEX/Poseidon indicates a rate of rise of 3.1 ± 0.7 mm yr–1 [2]. Church and White (2006) found a sea-level rise from January 1870 to December 2004 of 195 mm, a 20th century rate of sea-level rise of 1.7 ± 0.3 mm per yr and a significant acceleration of sea-level rise of 0.013 ± 0.006 mm per year. If this acceleration remains constant, then the 1990 to 2100 rise would range from 280 to 340 mm,[3]. Sea-level rise can be a product of global warming through two main processes: thermal expansion of sea water and widespread melting of land ice.[4] Global warming is predicted to cause significant rises in sea level over the course of the twenty-first century.
